Q: How many marriage counsellors does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Just one, but the light bulb has to really want to change.
Marriage counselling, if done by a skilled and experienced counsellor is highly effective for the vast majority of couples. However, couples have to be ready to “roll up their sleeves” and do the the hard work that it takes to get their marriage back on track. At least 80% of the couples I work with significantly improve their relationship after several months.
Keep in mind that not all counsellors are created equal. Counsellors are people first and they’re all different. Unfortunately, many couples have had bad experiences with couples counselling. Some couples complain of feeling frustrated and describe the process as mostly “bitch sessions” with little or no forward progress. The biggest complaint I hear is that marriage counselling often fails to provide practical tools and skills that make a difference outside the sessions. Whether you choose to work with me or not, I strongly recommend you find a counsellor that specializes in marriage therapy and has formal, post graduate training in this area.
It’s also important to have a good relationship and connection with your counsellor. That’s why I always recommend starting with an initial consultation. I offer a special reduced fee for this first meeting. That way you’ll be able to make sure there’s a good fit before you fully commit to the process.
