I recently talked with Best Health magazine writer, Anna Sharratt, about how couples can support each other in pursuing their passions and interests. In this case it was about how one partner wanted to run a marathon and how that would affect their and family and their marriage. What I stressed was that when one partner makes a “unilateral” decision (eg., to run a marathon), it can cause a lot of conflict. The solution is to always make “collateral” decisions, find solutions to problems that work for both partners. Open dialogue and effective communication opens possibilities for creative, win-win solutions.
